Combined Sewer Overflow Risks & Industrial-Scale Foundation Waterproofing

Newark City’s dense urban infrastructure and aging combined sewer system create the most complex urban waterproofing environment in Essex County — where combined sewer overflow during major storm events sends pressurized sewer water back through basement floor drains and lateral connections simultaneously with the groundwater infiltration through older masonry foundations that this historic city’s diverse building stock presents. Industrial-scale foundation waterproofing on Newark’s larger residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties rounds out a waterproofing profile requiring genuine urban scale expertise.
A1 Everlast understands that keeping a Newark basement dry means protecting against complex urban infrastructure failures. The city’s combined sewer system experiences chronic overflows during intense storms when stormwater input exceeds capacity, pressurizing the lines and forcing sewage-mixed water back through residential floor plumbing at the exact same time groundwater levels spike. Without advanced backflow prevention and commercial-grade drainage, these backups cause severe property damage. Whether you are dealing with seasonal flooding in Essex County or persistent dampness in your crawl space, water intrusion can compromise your home’s structural integrity and air quality. Our specialized professionals deploy fifty years of collective team experience to keep your entire foundation safe during New Jersey storms.

Advanced Interior & Exterior Water Drainage Systems

Controlling moisture flow before it creates intense pressure against your foundation walls is critical. High water tables and poor grading pool water outside, which requires specialized exterior and interior drainage installations.

Interior French Drains

We install perforated piping beneath Newark basement floors that manages the groundwater infiltration component of the city’s dual moisture challenge — intercepting groundwater seeping through older masonry foundations under the hydrostatic pressure that Essex County storm events create, directing it to sump systems before it reaches basement floor surfaces through foundation pathways.
waterproofing icon

Exterior French Drains

These curtain drains reduce soil saturation around Newark’s older foundation perimeters during Essex County’s heavy storm seasons — lowering the exterior groundwater load on historic masonry foundations that have been managing seasonal moisture pressure for generations, reducing the infiltration rate that sump systems must manage during major storm events.

Channel Drains

For Newark’s urban residential and commercial properties where compact lot configurations and extensive impervious coverage concentrate runoff toward older masonry foundation perimeters during intense storm events, channel drains intercept surface flow before it adds to the elevated groundwater conditions that combined sewer overflows simultaneously create below.

Total Basement & Foundation Waterproofing Solutions

Because underground water pressure builds up relentlessly, moisture pushes right through thick concrete. Our specialists deliver commercial grade protective sealants that successfully defend your foundation externally.

Basement Waterproofing Services

Tailored for Newark’s historic brick, stone, and block foundations, our specialized sealants match vintage masonry pore structures perfectly. We completely skip standard concrete formulas to deliver targeted hydrostatic reinforcement that successfully preserves residential masonry integrity against persistent urban groundwater infiltration.

Foundation Waterproofing Services

For Newark properties where historic foundation porosity and urban moisture exposure have driven significant groundwater infiltration, exterior rubberized membrane application — following appropriate masonry restoration — provides the comprehensive exterior barrier that stops groundwater before it contacts the porous historic foundation material.

Masonry Services for Waterproofing

Newark’s historic foundations — original brick, rubble stone, and early block construction across the city’s diverse neighborhood building stock — require period-sensitive masonry assessment and compatible repair materials before any waterproofing treatment provides lasting protection against the urban moisture conditions these structures face.

Crawl Space Management, Sump Pumps & Egress Services

Concealed moisture below your property causes dangerous wood rot and unhealthy indoor air. We protect these lower zones through advanced structural repairs and mechanical ventilation.
waterproofing icon

Crawl Space Encapsulation

We install high-mil vapor barriers in Newark crawl spaces that seal seasonal soil moisture from Essex County’s groundwater cycle from migrating into structural wood — protecting floor framing from the chronic humidity that Newark’s urban soil environment creates in unprotected sub-floor spaces throughout the wet season.
waterproofing icon

Sump Pumps

We install primary and battery-backup sump systems for Newark residential properties — ensuring adequate discharge capacity for the groundwater infiltration component of the city’s basement moisture challenge, with battery backup providing continuous protection through the power disruptions that accompany major Essex County storm events.

Window Wells & Egress Windows

We install properly drained window wells and egress windows for Newark’s residential properties — managing surface moisture at below-grade openings while providing the emergency egress capability that current building standards require across the city’s diverse residential housing stock.

FAQs Asked About Waterproofing in Newark City

Get answers to common questions about our services.

What is a combined sewer system and why does it create unique basement flooding risk in Newark?
Newark’s combined sewer system carries both sanitary sewage and stormwater runoff in the same underground pipes — a legacy infrastructure design common in older American cities that was standard practice before separate stormwater and sanitary systems became the modern standard. During major storm events, stormwater input to this combined system can temporarily exceed its discharge capacity, pressurizing the pipes and sending the combined water back up through lateral connections into basements through floor drains, toilet bases, and laundry connections. This reverse flow carries the contaminated combined sewage-stormwater mixture — a health hazard distinct from the clean groundwater infiltration that standard waterproofing addresses.
A backwater valve is a one-way check valve installed on the lateral sewer pipe connecting your home to the municipal combined sewer main. During normal conditions, the valve’s flap opens freely to allow sewage to flow from your home to the sewer. When the combined sewer system pressurizes during overflow conditions, the backflow pressure closes the valve flap, physically blocking pressurized combined sewer water from entering your basement through lateral connections. Backwater valves are mechanical devices requiring periodic inspection to confirm the flap opens and closes freely — they can be fouled by debris that prevents complete closure. Annual inspection is recommended for Newark properties.
Our waterproofing scope — interior drain tile, sump pump, crystalline treatment, exterior membrane — addresses the groundwater infiltration component of Newark’s basement moisture challenge directly. Backwater valve installation on the lateral sewer pipe requires a licensed plumber for the sewer lateral connection work, which we coordinate for Newark homeowners who need both components addressed. We provide Newark property owners with clear scope delineation — identifying which components we install directly and which require plumbing contractor coordination — and we facilitate that coordination so homeowners receive complete dual-mechanism protection through a managed process rather than independently managing two separate contractor engagements.
Newark’s older brick and masonry foundations admit groundwater at higher rates than modern poured concrete foundations under the same hydrostatic pressure — the larger pore networks of historic lime mortar and older brick provide more moisture pathways than dense modern concrete. During combined sewer overflow events, when both sewer backflow and elevated groundwater pressure are occurring simultaneously, the porous older foundations admit the groundwater component more rapidly than modern foundations would, compounding the flooding from the sewer backflow with additional foundation infiltration at the same time. This compound simultaneous loading produces more severe basement flooding than either mechanism alone would create, making both the backwater valve and the foundation waterproofing important components of complete protection in Newark’s historic residential stock.
Yes — A1 Everlast has served Newark and Essex County’s urban property spectrum for over 50 years, waterproofing single-family homes, two-family and multi-family residential buildings, mixed-use commercial-residential properties, and commercial structures throughout the city. Larger buildings present drainage volume requirements, system configuration complexity, and multi-tenant coordination considerations beyond single-family scope — all of which we address as standard project planning for Newark’s urban scale. Our commercial and industrial waterproofing experience is directly applicable to Newark’s larger residential and mixed-use properties.

Premier Structural Drainage Across Newark City Homes

Newark’s combined sewer overflow challenge is the most consequential single waterproofing issue that many of the city’s residential homeowners face — because a properly installed sump pump and drain tile system that would completely resolve basement moisture in a separate-sewer community provides only partial protection in Newark, where the sewer backflow pathway enters through the plumbing system rather than the foundation and bypasses the drainage system entirely. A1 Everlast has served Essex County’s most complex urban waterproofing environments for over 50 years, consistently finding that Newark homeowners who have invested in drainage improvements continue to experience flooding from the unaddressed sewer surcharge pathway — and that backwater valve installation on the lateral sewer line is the component that completes the protection that drainage investment alone cannot provide.
The industrial-scale foundation dimension reflects Newark’s building stock diversity — larger residential buildings, commercial properties, and mixed-use structures requiring waterproofing at scales that exceed standard single-family residential scope in drainage volume, system configuration, and project management complexity. A1 Everlast has the commercial and industrial waterproofing experience appropriate for Newark’s full property spectrum, applying appropriate scale and specifications to each property type encountered in this diverse urban environment. Every project is fully warranted and completed by licensed, insured professionals with same-day and next-day estimates available.

Back in 2020 A1 Everlast demo’d my dad’s front stairs and rebuilt a beautiful stone porch & set of stairs in its place. They were a great bunch of guys knowledgeable, kind, quick & skilled. Unfortunately due to the weather & a lot of rain the stairs sustained a little damage. Since my dad passed away in 2024 I reached out to Tim to inquire about the 10yr warranty they had given for their workmanship. I can’t say enough about Tim. He was so apologetic & went to work right away to resolve the problems we were encountering. All while he himself was dealing w/ a private health issue within his family. Thank you Tim for everything I highly recommend A1 Everlast for all concrete and stair/porch work! They are #1

We had a great experience with A1 Everlast. They rebuilt our fireplace box, installed a new liner, and added a new crown, and everything was done with excellent attention to detail. John was especially attentive throughout the process and made everything feel simple and stress-free.

The team was very professional, respectful, and easy to work with. We also really appreciated how quickly they were able to get started—coming out the very next day after inspecting our chimney.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with the quality of the work and would highly recommend A1 Everlast to anyone needing chimney repairs or restoration!

If you are looking for a contracting company that actually delivers on its promises, look no further than A1 Everlast. From start to finish, my experience was nothing short of exceptional, and that is largely thanks to Anthony.
In an industry where it’s hard to find people you can trust, Anthony is a breath of fresh air. His professionalism was evident from our very first meeting; he arrived on time, respected my property, and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. What impressed me most was his depth of knowledge. He didn't just give me a quote; he took the time to explain the technical aspects of the job, offered intelligent solutions for my specific needs, and ensured I understood exactly what was being done and why.
Perhaps most importantly, Anthony operates with a level of honesty that is rare to find. A number of contractors I've come across in my years of being a real estate investor have attempted to fabricate issues just to secure a job to perform. It was intuitively clear to me that after speaking with Anthony this was not the case. His assessment was genuine and tailored to my specific needs. Words cannot explain how pleased and satsified I am in dealing with A1. To many more, thanks Everlast and just as importantly thank you Anthony!

We had Bob come and take a look at our chimney and roof as we are first time home buyers and wanted to ensure the chimney was in working order. we also noticed with our roof a small soft spot on our ceiling that he was able to find out that there was a small portion on our roof that needed some work to stop the issue. He was personable, professional, and ensured that all our questions were answered/ satisfied. 10/10 would recommend giving Bob a call!

Very responsive, professional, and punctual team. I called Anthony in the morning, he was at the house that same afternoon, and had workers on site by 9 a.m. the following day to repair a gas/carbon monoxide leak. He estimated the job would be done by 3 p.m., and it was completed by 1:30. Highly recommend them — 100%.

Chimney repair due to water damage and age. They also installed a new damper. Timmy, Carlos, and Victor were all excellent. They did the job with excellence and they did it quickly. From the time I called to the time they signed the contract was quick, the price was reasonable, and they were just a pleasure to work with. Once we signed the contract, they arrived to do the job as scheduled only days later. They were on time. They were polite and courteous. They did a great job and cleaned up very neatly afterwards. No hassles.
