Hackensack River Water Table & Urban Sewer Surcharge Protection

Hackensack City’s position along the Hackensack River creates the dual basement moisture threat that defines the most challenging urban river-corridor waterproofing environments in Bergen County — river-adjacent water table flooding that rapidly elevates groundwater in the city’s most flood-proximate residential sections, combined with urban sewer surcharge risk during major storm events that pushes water back through floor drains and sewer-connected plumbing when the combined sewer system becomes overwhelmed. These two mechanisms require separate solutions operating simultaneously.
At A1 Everlast, we recognize that keeping a Hackensack basement dry requires addressing unique riverfront and urban infrastructure factors. The Hackensack River influences local groundwater, creating continuous pressure from below, while the city’s sewer system poses backup risks during major storms, forcing water up through floor drains and bypassing standard foundation drainage completely. Whether you are dealing with seasonal flooding in Bergen County or persistent dampness in your crawl space, water intrusion can compromise your home’s structural integrity and air quality. Our dedicated crew combines fifty years of collective team experience to keep neighborhood properties completely dry through every severe New Jersey storm.

Advanced Interior & Exterior Water Drainage Systems

Surface water frequently pools near foundations due to high water tables. Implementing comprehensive exterior drainage and interior systems controls the flow of water before it builds severe pressure against walls.

Interior French Drains

We install perforated piping beneath Hackensack basement floors that manages the Hackensack River water table groundwater component of the city’s dual moisture challenge — intercepting groundwater infiltrating through foundation walls and floor joints under river-adjacent water table pressure and directing it to sump systems before it reaches the basement floor surface.

Exterior French Drains

These curtain drains reduce soil saturation around Hackensack’s foundation perimeters during Bergen County’s heavy storm seasons — complementing interior drainage by managing the above-grade runoff contribution to the river-adjacent groundwater conditions that major Hackensack River storm events create.

Channel Drains

For Hackensack’s urban residential properties where compact lot configurations and impervious surface coverage concentrate surface runoff toward foundation perimeters during major storm events, channel drains intercept surface flow at critical below-grade entry points.

Total Basement & Foundation Waterproofing Solutions

Strong water pressure beneath the soil can easily breach your solid concrete structure. We establish durable exterior waterproofing membranes that seal out moisture before it penetrates.

Basement Waterproofing Services

Our specialized sealants protect Hackensack basements by creating permanent interior moisture barriers that block the aggressive Hackensack River water table groundwater component. This high-performance system seals critical wall and floor surfaces directly while separate, dedicated sewer protection components manage surcharge pathways.

Foundation Waterproofing Services

For Hackensack homes in the most river-adjacent sections where water table flood events have progressively deteriorated foundation masonry, exterior rubberized membrane application restores the comprehensive exterior barrier appropriate for foundations subject to frequent river-adjacent moisture exposure.

Masonry Services for Waterproofing

Hackensack’s older residential foundations show the mortar deterioration and crack development that river-adjacent moisture cycling and urban environmental stress produce — conditions requiring professional restoration before waterproofing treatment can provide lasting protection.

Crawl Space Management, Sump Pumps & Egress Services

Unseen crawl space moisture frequently ruins joists and diminishes household air quality. We safeguard these critical lower areas by implementing reliable structural and mechanical improvements.
waterproofing icon

Crawl Space Encapsulation

We install high-mil vapor barriers in Hackensack crawl spaces that seal the elevated Hackensack River corridor soil moisture from migrating into structural wood — protecting floor framing from the chronic humidity that river-adjacent terrain maintains in unprotected sub-floor spaces throughout the wet season.
waterproofing icon

Sump Pumps

We install primary and battery-backup sump systems sized for Hackensack’s Hackensack River water table volumes — with battery backup providing continuous protection through the power outages that accompany the major storm events simultaneously creating river water table risk and sewer surcharge conditions.
waterproofing icon

Window Wells & Egress Windows

We install properly drained window wells and egress windows for Hackensack’s residential properties — managing surface moisture at below-grade openings while providing the emergency egress capability that current building standards require.

FAQs Asked About Waterproofing in Hackensack City

Get answers to common questions about our services.

How does the Hackensack River water table specifically affect basement flooding in Hackensack's most river-adjacent sections?
The Hackensack River maintains a hydrological connection with groundwater throughout the adjacent residential sections — river level rises during major storm events are transmitted to the surrounding groundwater, elevating the water table in river-adjacent Hackensack neighborhoods rapidly and to levels that can approach basement floor elevation during the most significant events. This water table rise creates foundation pressure from below and laterally, forcing groundwater through floor-to-wall joints and foundation wall pores into basement spaces regardless of whether surface flooding has reached the property. Properties within several blocks of the Hackensack River corridor experience this water table influence most directly; properties further from the river experience a diminishing but still meaningful effect.
Sewer surcharge water enters through the lateral sewer pipe that connects your home’s floor drains, laundry sinks, and toilet connections to the municipal sewer main. When the municipal system is overwhelmed during major storms, pressurized sewer water reverses flow in the lateral pipe and enters the basement through these sewer-connected openings — a pathway that bypasses the foundation wall and floor entirely. The sump pump, which is designed to collect and eject groundwater infiltrating through the foundation, cannot intercept this sewer-entry pathway because the surcharge water is entering through the plumbing system rather than seeping through the concrete. Only a backwater valve installed on the lateral sewer line physically blocks this reverse-flow pathway.
Yes — our Hackensack assessments address both mechanisms and produce integrated recommendations for complete dual-mechanism protection. The waterproofing system installation — interior drain tile, sump pump, crystalline treatment — is within our direct installation scope. Backwater valve installation on the lateral sewer line requires a licensed plumber for the sewer connection work, which we coordinate as part of the complete project to ensure both components are installed in the appropriate sequence and at the appropriate locations relative to each other. We provide Hackensack homeowners with a single point of contact for the complete dual-mechanism solution rather than requiring separate contractor management for each component.
The flood event pattern provides the primary diagnostic information. Water table flooding from the Hackensack River correlation is evidenced by basement water that appears during or following major storm events through foundation walls or floor-to-wall joints — the timing correlates with storm events and water levels are highest in the hours following peak rainfall. Sewer surcharge flooding appears specifically through floor drains, laundry sink connections, or toilet bases during peak storm intensity — it comes from below the floor surface through open plumbing rather than through the foundation wall. Many Hackensack homeowners experience both simultaneously; our assessment and homeowner interview confirms the specific entry mechanism pattern before recommending scope.
Annual sump system testing confirms operational readiness for the river water table component. Backwater valve annual inspection confirms the flap mechanism opens freely for normal sewage discharge and closes completely against reverse flow — a simple mechanical check that confirms the valve is functioning and not blocked by debris. Annual testing of battery backup confirms charge status and confirms automatic activation when primary power is disconnected. For Hackensack properties where the backwater valve is installed on a combined sewer lateral that handles both sewage and stormwater drainage, more frequent inspection may be warranted given the higher sediment loads that combined systems carry.

Defend Hackensack City Basements

Hackensack’s dual water table and sewer surcharge challenge is the defining waterproofing complexity for Bergen County’s Hackensack River urban corridor — and it is the specific reason that many Hackensack homeowners have experienced continued basement flooding even after investing in sump pump upgrades, because a new or larger pump addresses only the groundwater infiltration mechanism while the sewer surcharge pathway — which enters through the plumbing system rather than the foundation — remains completely unaddressed. A1 Everlast has served Bergen County’s most complex urban waterproofing environments for over 50 years, accurately diagnosing both mechanisms and recommending solutions that address each independently rather than leaving one active after the other is resolved.
The sewer surcharge component requires backwater valve installation on the lateral sewer line — a one-way valve that physically blocks pressurized reverse flow from the surcharging municipal system before it enters through floor drains and toilet connections. This is a plumbing scope coordinated with a licensed plumber alongside our waterproofing installation, and it is the component that makes the difference between a partially effective system that still floods during sewer surcharge events and a fully effective system that protects against both Hackensack River water table and sewer surcharge conditions. Every project is fully warranted and completed by licensed, insured professionals with same-day and next-day estimates available.

Back in 2020 A1 Everlast demo’d my dad’s front stairs and rebuilt a beautiful stone porch & set of stairs in its place. They were a great bunch of guys knowledgeable, kind, quick & skilled. Unfortunately due to the weather & a lot of rain the stairs sustained a little damage. Since my dad passed away in 2024 I reached out to Tim to inquire about the 10yr warranty they had given for their workmanship. I can’t say enough about Tim. He was so apologetic & went to work right away to resolve the problems we were encountering. All while he himself was dealing w/ a private health issue within his family. Thank you Tim for everything I highly recommend A1 Everlast for all concrete and stair/porch work! They are #1

We had a great experience with A1 Everlast. They rebuilt our fireplace box, installed a new liner, and added a new crown, and everything was done with excellent attention to detail. John was especially attentive throughout the process and made everything feel simple and stress-free.

The team was very professional, respectful, and easy to work with. We also really appreciated how quickly they were able to get started—coming out the very next day after inspecting our chimney.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with the quality of the work and would highly recommend A1 Everlast to anyone needing chimney repairs or restoration!

If you are looking for a contracting company that actually delivers on its promises, look no further than A1 Everlast. From start to finish, my experience was nothing short of exceptional, and that is largely thanks to Anthony.
In an industry where it’s hard to find people you can trust, Anthony is a breath of fresh air. His professionalism was evident from our very first meeting; he arrived on time, respected my property, and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. What impressed me most was his depth of knowledge. He didn't just give me a quote; he took the time to explain the technical aspects of the job, offered intelligent solutions for my specific needs, and ensured I understood exactly what was being done and why.
Perhaps most importantly, Anthony operates with a level of honesty that is rare to find. A number of contractors I've come across in my years of being a real estate investor have attempted to fabricate issues just to secure a job to perform. It was intuitively clear to me that after speaking with Anthony this was not the case. His assessment was genuine and tailored to my specific needs. Words cannot explain how pleased and satsified I am in dealing with A1. To many more, thanks Everlast and just as importantly thank you Anthony!

We had Bob come and take a look at our chimney and roof as we are first time home buyers and wanted to ensure the chimney was in working order. we also noticed with our roof a small soft spot on our ceiling that he was able to find out that there was a small portion on our roof that needed some work to stop the issue. He was personable, professional, and ensured that all our questions were answered/ satisfied. 10/10 would recommend giving Bob a call!

Very responsive, professional, and punctual team. I called Anthony in the morning, he was at the house that same afternoon, and had workers on site by 9 a.m. the following day to repair a gas/carbon monoxide leak. He estimated the job would be done by 3 p.m., and it was completed by 1:30. Highly recommend them — 100%.

Chimney repair due to water damage and age. They also installed a new damper. Timmy, Carlos, and Victor were all excellent. They did the job with excellence and they did it quickly. From the time I called to the time they signed the contract was quick, the price was reasonable, and they were just a pleasure to work with. Once we signed the contract, they arrived to do the job as scheduled only days later. They were on time. They were polite and courteous. They did a great job and cleaned up very neatly afterwards. No hassles.
