Foundation Crack Repair & Interior French Drains Installed

Bergenfield Borough’s established suburban housing stock — predominantly mid-century colonials and cape cods on compact lots — presents a waterproofing profile driven by two converging conditions: foundation cracks caused by the seasonal soil shifting that Bergen County’s clay-content soil produces through repeated expansion and contraction cycles, and the interior French drain installation that these older foundations require to manage the groundwater that infiltrates through those cracks and through deteriorated mortar joints in the concrete-block foundations common in this era of construction.
At A1 Everlast, we understand that maintaining a dry basement in Bergenfield comes with its own unique set of challenges. Mid-century concrete block foundation construction was common throughout Bergen County and is significantly more porous under hydrostatic pressure than poured concrete — making interior drainage and crystalline sealing especially important in Bergenfield’s established residential neighborhoods. Whether you are dealing with seasonal flooding in Bergen County or persistent dampness in your crawl space, water intrusion can compromise your home’s structural integrity and air quality. Our team has spent over 50 years helping local homeowners keep their foundations dry and secure through every New Jersey storm.

Advanced Interior & Exterior Water Drainage Systems

Interior French Drains

We route a perforated interior drainage network beneath the perimeter of the basement floor to intercept rising subsurface water. This system captures groundwater infiltrating through block foundation walls and floor joints, directing it safely to the sump system before it reaches the surface to damage finished Bergenfield living spaces.

Exterior French Drains

Our technicians embed exterior trench networks to pull water away and decrease the ground saturation surrounding local foundations during wet seasons. This lowers the sustained hydrostatic pressure against block foundation walls that is the primary driver of mortar joint erosion and progressive water infiltration in older Bergenfield homes.

Channel Drains

In Bergenfield neighborhoods where compact lot configurations direct surface runoff toward the foundation, channel drains intercept flow at the critical point, protecting below-grade entry points from the severe water accumulation small suburban lots produce.

Total Basement & Foundation Waterproofing Solutions

Basement Waterproofing Services

Our technicians apply specialized crystalline or membrane sealants directly to Bergenfield’s concrete block foundation walls. This professional process fills and seals vulnerable mortar joints and block pores, eliminating the primary paths for moisture to guarantee a completely dry basement interior environment.

Foundation Waterproofing Services

For Bergenfield homes where block foundation condition has deteriorated to the point where interior treatment alone cannot overcome the volume of moisture infiltration, exterior excavation and rubberized membrane application provides the comprehensive barrier that stops water before it contacts the foundation wall.

Masonry Services for Waterproofing

Soil-shift-driven foundation cracks in Bergenfield require structural assessment and appropriate repair — polyurethane crack injection for actively leaking cracks, carbon fiber strapping for walls showing lateral movement — before any waterproofing membrane is applied to ensure the seal is applied to a stable substrate.

Crawl Space Management, Sump Pumps & Egress Services

Concealed water beneath your house can spark wood rot and poor indoor air quality. We secure these essential sub-level areas with mechanical and structural upgrades.

Crawl Space Encapsulation

We install high-mil vapor barriers in Bergenfield crawl spaces that seal the moisture evaporation from Bergen County’s seasonally saturated soil — protecting structural floor framing from the chronic humid exposure that unencapsulated crawl spaces in this climate consistently produce.
waterproofing icon

Sump Pumps

We install primary and battery-backup sump pumps that maintain continuous water ejection during Bergen County storm events — ensuring that the interior French drain system has continuous discharge capacity even when utility power is disrupted by the same storms driving the basement moisture.

Window Wells & Egress Windows

We install properly drained window wells and code-compliant egress windows in Bergenfield basements — addressing one of the most common water entry points in these mid-century homes while providing the emergency egress capability that current building standards require.
We offer structural masonry rebuilds, safety checks, and certified flue relining for Bergenfield homes.
From shingle repair to complete roof replacements protecting your home from above.

Why Choose A1 Everlast for Waterproofing?

Our 50 years of collective experience provides expert structural waterproofing throughout Bergenfield Borough.
Bergenfield’s concrete block foundation housing stock requires specific waterproofing expertise that distinguishes between the poured-concrete and block-construction approaches — because block foundations fail differently, require different diagnostic approaches, and respond to different treatment methods than the poured-concrete foundations common in newer construction. A1 Everlast has worked in Bergen County’s mid-century residential communities for over 50 years, developing the block-foundation-specific assessment and treatment capabilities that Bergenfield’s housing stock requires.
The most important distinction our team makes in Bergenfield is between a foundation crack that is structurally stable and one that is actively widening — because the waterproofing approach for each is different, and applying the same sealant to both produces satisfactory results in one case and failure within a season in the other. Our Bergenfield assessments document crack history, measure wall plumb deviation, and assess mortar joint condition before recommending any scope — ensuring the solution is matched to the actual structural and moisture condition of each specific foundation. Every project is fully warranted and completed by licensed, insured professionals with same-day and next-day estimates available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are concrete block foundations in Bergenfield more prone to water infiltration than poured concrete?
Concrete block foundations have inherent porosity at two locations that poured concrete does not — the mortar joints between individual blocks, and the hollow cores of the blocks themselves when they are not filled with concrete or grout during construction. Both locations allow moisture migration under hydrostatic pressure at lower thresholds than solid poured concrete. As Bergen County’s seasonal soil moisture cycles expand and contract the soil around the foundation repeatedly over decades, the mortar joints in Bergenfield’s block foundations gradually open and erode, progressively increasing moisture infiltration over time. Crystalline treatment applied to the interior block surface addresses both the mortar joint porosity and the block pore migration simultaneously.
Structural cracks in Bergenfield foundations are those that indicate active movement — either vertical cracks at the corner of the foundation wall where differential settlement is occurring, horizontal cracks mid-wall that indicate lateral soil pressure bowing the wall inward, or stair-step cracks through mortar joints that indicate settlement movement. Cosmetic cracks are typically fine vertical hairline cracks resulting from concrete or mortar shrinkage during curing rather than from ongoing movement — they allow moisture infiltration but do not indicate structural instability. Our Bergenfield assessment distinguishes between these conditions and recommends the appropriate repair approach for each before any waterproofing treatment is applied.
Bergen County soil with significant clay content expands when saturated during spring and wet periods, then contracts during dry summer and fall conditions. This seasonal expansion and contraction cycle exerts alternating pressure and release on foundation walls — during expansion, lateral pressure pushes against the wall; during contraction, the soil pulls slightly away. This repeated loading and unloading cycle stresses the concrete and mortar at existing crack locations, causing them to grow slightly with each cycle. Surface-applied sealants that cannot accommodate this movement crack and fail; flexible polyurethane crack injection materials that cure with some elasticity provide more durable seals under these seasonal movement conditions.
Yes, in some cases — when moisture infiltration is clearly localized to a specific wall or corner based on visible staining patterns and inspection, we can install drain tile in the affected perimeter section rather than the full basement perimeter. This targeted approach reduces cost and construction disruption while addressing the active problem. However, in Bergenfield’s block foundation environment where moisture can migrate laterally through block courses, we assess whether the visible infiltration point accurately represents the full extent of moisture entry before recommending a partial installation — ensuring we are not leaving active pathways unaddressed outside the installed section.
Interior drain tile installation involves concrete saw-cutting and excavation — processes that create concrete dust and debris that we contain with plastic sheeting barriers isolating the work area from the living space above. We typically complete a standard Bergenfield basement perimeter installation in two to three days, perform thorough site cleanup each evening, and restore the concrete surface over the drain with a poured concrete finish that restores the basement floor to normal use conditions. We discuss the specific installation timeline, disruption management, and temporary access restrictions with every Bergenfield homeowner during the estimate consultation before work begins.

Back in 2020 A1 Everlast demo’d my dad’s front stairs and rebuilt a beautiful stone porch & set of stairs in its place. They were a great bunch of guys knowledgeable, kind, quick & skilled. Unfortunately due to the weather & a lot of rain the stairs sustained a little damage. Since my dad passed away in 2024 I reached out to Tim to inquire about the 10yr warranty they had given for their workmanship. I can’t say enough about Tim. He was so apologetic & went to work right away to resolve the problems we were encountering. All while he himself was dealing w/ a private health issue within his family. Thank you Tim for everything I highly recommend A1 Everlast for all concrete and stair/porch work! They are #1

We had a great experience with A1 Everlast. They rebuilt our fireplace box, installed a new liner, and added a new crown, and everything was done with excellent attention to detail. John was especially attentive throughout the process and made everything feel simple and stress-free.

The team was very professional, respectful, and easy to work with. We also really appreciated how quickly they were able to get started—coming out the very next day after inspecting our chimney.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with the quality of the work and would highly recommend A1 Everlast to anyone needing chimney repairs or restoration!

If you are looking for a contracting company that actually delivers on its promises, look no further than A1 Everlast. From start to finish, my experience was nothing short of exceptional, and that is largely thanks to Anthony.
In an industry where it’s hard to find people you can trust, Anthony is a breath of fresh air. His professionalism was evident from our very first meeting; he arrived on time, respected my property, and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. What impressed me most was his depth of knowledge. He didn't just give me a quote; he took the time to explain the technical aspects of the job, offered intelligent solutions for my specific needs, and ensured I understood exactly what was being done and why.
Perhaps most importantly, Anthony operates with a level of honesty that is rare to find. A number of contractors I've come across in my years of being a real estate investor have attempted to fabricate issues just to secure a job to perform. It was intuitively clear to me that after speaking with Anthony this was not the case. His assessment was genuine and tailored to my specific needs. Words cannot explain how pleased and satsified I am in dealing with A1. To many more, thanks Everlast and just as importantly thank you Anthony!

We had Bob come and take a look at our chimney and roof as we are first time home buyers and wanted to ensure the chimney was in working order. we also noticed with our roof a small soft spot on our ceiling that he was able to find out that there was a small portion on our roof that needed some work to stop the issue. He was personable, professional, and ensured that all our questions were answered/ satisfied. 10/10 would recommend giving Bob a call!

Excellent communication as the job progresses and if situations pop up.
They found errors in my backyard porch roof that whomever built it seemed to miss and were able find the resources to finish the very next day.

Very responsive, professional, and punctual team. I called Anthony in the morning, he was at the house that same afternoon, and had workers on site by 9 a.m. the following day to repair a gas/carbon monoxide leak. He estimated the job would be done by 3 p.m., and it was completed by 1:30. Highly recommend them — 100%.

Chimney repair due to water damage and age. They also installed a new damper. Timmy, Carlos, and Victor were all excellent. They did the job with excellence and they did it quickly. From the time I called to the time they signed the contract was quick, the price was reasonable, and they were just a pleasure to work with. Once we signed the contract, they arrived to do the job as scheduled only days later. They were on time. They were polite and courteous. They did a great job and cleaned up very neatly afterwards. No hassles.
